Final report  of PhD study tour 1999

Advanced education is an important part of the training of PhD fellows of the graduate school VLAG. Therefore, we, these PhD fellows, attend courses and congresses. Apart from that, every two years an international study tour is organised. The last visits were to the United States (1995), and Scandinavia (1997). The purposes of the study tour are to broaden knowledge in the field of nutrition, health, and epidemiology, to exchange research results with scientists of foreign universities, research institutes and food industry; and to build up international contacts.

From 13-27 August 1999 we visited South Africa with 19 PhD fellows. South Africa has our special interest because research covers both over- and undernutrition. Moreover, the co-operation between our division and universities and institutes in South Africa is becoming more intensive. During the study tour we met researchers in the field of nutrition, health and epidemiology.
